Passings

It is with great sadness that the following individuals have been lost to us, but their memories will live on in our hearts.

Carol Bartello, an active member of the José Carreras Society of America (JCSA), lost her battle with pancreatic cancer on November 12, 2001. She was a dear friend to many and a long-time fan of Mr. Carreras. Her husband Neil has asked that in lieu of flowers or any other memorial, donations be made to the Friends Foundation in her name. Carol’s strong commitment to the Foundation will continue through her friends and family.

Alex Steinman, nephew of Debbie Blumenthal, President of JCSA, tragically lost his life on September 11, 2001 in the attack on the World Trade Center. Debbie has received an outpouring of support from Carreras Foundation donors via memorial gifts given in Alex’ name.

Professor Ricardo Castillo Cofiño, died on November 4, 2001 following a long and severe illness. Dr. Castillo devoted his life to the fight against leukemia and other hematological malignancies. For the past 8 years, he was the Director of the Spanish Bone Marrow Donor Registry, created by the Carreras Foundation in Barcelona. Additionally he received numerous awards for his contributions to research and the field of hematology. He has the deep appreciation of his colleagues and enjoyed a long and outstanding professional career.
