Dottie Says... By Dottie Thomas Last year I embarked on a project to provide copies of the textbook “Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation” to transplant centers in countries which might not be able to purchase the $295 book. The publishers, Blackwell Science, generously provided me with 20 copies. Several of our medical friends suggested transplant centers that might make excellent use of the 1000 page comprehensive text. In response to my first explanation of the project in this column I received several contributions specifically earmarked for postage to send the books to their destination. Unfortunately, progress has been somewhat slow. I became very wary of mailing by regular mail after having two books completely vanish. Federal Express seemed prohibitively expensive. Friends in Russia told me not even to bother trying to mail them as the chance of their reaching the destination was most unlikely. On the bright side, I am now able to report that we have successfully placed copies in Mexico, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Guatemala by giving them to friends to hand carry to their destination. I have 3 more ready for a friend to take to Brazil in April. This is no small task, since the books weigh approximately 6 pounds each! I plan to continue to delivering the books through delegates. Our thanks to Blackwell, to our messengers, and to those of you who have supported the project. |
